Reading Supports Low Tech to High Tech



A Reading and Technology Continuum for Supporting Struggling Learners -From Low Tech to High Tech

  • Start with standard text, use highlighters, post its

  • Standard text with active reading strategies, advance organizer, guided reading supports, graphic organizer for big picture

  • Talking portable electronic device (Franklin Speller) to define challenging words

  • Single word scanner (e.g. The Reading Pen), with speech output and word definition

  • Predictable text with repetition for younger students

  • Digital text but increase font size, spacing, change background and text color, may still need advance organizer and hyperlinks to vocabulary

  • Low readability, high interest text in standard or digital format

  • Digital text, with think aloud support & comments, text to speech support and graphic organizers as needed

  • Picture/symbols with text and text to speech if needed

  • Text to speech software such as Read Please, Thinking Reader, Solo, Read 180, Kurzweil with multimedia agents, notes, study, reading supports
